Storage Tips/FAQ's

Use bubble wrap to protect your fragile goods.

Wrap dishes and glasses in tissue paper or bubble wrap.

Wrap table legs with bubble wrap.

Wardrobe boxes allow you to store your clothing on hangers which keeps their shape.

Place a protective cover over your soft furnishings.

Stack chairs seat to seat with cloth or paper to separate them.

For fragile good such as pictures and mirrors, wrap the item in bubble wrap, place in a box, mark as fragile and stack on its end.

Wrap delicate items in bubble wrap or other protective packaging.

Make up an inventory of your stored items and keep it in a safe place at home Estimate the replacement value of each item on the list, as this could be useful when insuring your goods.

Bin liners are not recommended for storing items of clothing as moisture in the fabric gets trapped when the bags are sealed.

Fill boxes to capacity, as partially full or bulging boxes may tip or collapse.

Pack heavy items into small boxes so that they are easy to lift and to prevent the box giving way under the weight.

Label or number boxes and keep a reference of content so you can locate items when you need to.

Place heavy or bulky items in the unit first to create a good base for stacking.

Put those items that you are most likely to need most often near the front of the unit.

Stack similar sized boxes together to maximise space.

Do not place heavy items on soft furnishings such as sofas or mattresses.

Where possible avoid stacking or leaning furniture against outside walls to aid ventilation.

Place lighter items on top of the heavier items.

Cover your goods with dust sheets to protect against dust.

Defrost and dry fridge/freezers before storing and keep door slightly ajar to prevent condensation.

Do not put anything into storage which is wet or damp.

Garden equipment, bikes or cars must be thoroughly cleaned and all fuel tanks emptied before storing.
